Reforestation of Degraded Pasture Land
We aim to demonstrate the clear distinction, in regard to environmental impact on site quality, between forest management and livestock production.
On Site Education of Reforestation Issues
Our forestry engineers maintain high professional standards in recording all scientific aspects of the project. In addition the project focuses on economic, social, and political issues directly related to tropical reforestation.
Future Application of Knowledge Gained
Our experience with the multifaceted reforestation initiative will be applied to larger projects with the intention of attracting future investors to implement successful reforestation of the Brazilian Amazon.
Project Overview
Approximately 10,000 seedlings have been planted across the Parauau River from the port city of Breves, the main commercial center on Marajo island.
Five native species have been planted throughout the project area: Andiroba, Jatobá, Paricá, Sumaúma, and Virola.
Ten individuals (both American and Brazilian) collaborate to maintain and
analyze the growth and productivity of the project.
Two distinct bio-regions are found within the project, 40% is logged wetland, and the remaining 60% is abandoned agricultural land.
Our Nursery
Using an on-site propagation house and several shaded germination racks, our nursery technicians propagate all of our planted seedlings from seed stock. This enables us to observe and record information about all phases of tree growth. Future ventures of similar nature will benefit greatly from the data we collect here.
Our Planting Area
We planted our seedlings in rows running from east to west, spread three meters apart across both habitat types. Species tolerant to shade were planted in the logged wetland, and those requiring full sun were planted in the abandoned agricultural field. Our planting area is ideal for scientific analysis, in addition to being aesthetically pleasing.
Our Visitors Trail
We invite all interested in seeing our progress to visit the project. Visitors can walk on a trail through the entirety of our project to understand our goals and challenges, as well as appreciate the beauty of proper forest stewardship practices. Along the scenic 45 minute walk, visitors will see five replanted species native to the Brazilian Amazon representing our efforts to improve the environmental quality of formerly logged and agriculturally degraded lands.
